The Central Bureau of Investigation filed the final status report in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case after completion of investigation. The status report was filed in a sealed cover before a bench of Justices Aftab Alam and R M Lodha.

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday registered a case against 20 policemen in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter case in Gujarat. The fresh FIR was registered by the probe agency after the Special Investigation Team probing the case gave its complaint to the CBI on December 15. All the 20 policemen have been charged with murder and destruction of evidence, a senior CBI officer said. The Gujarat high court had on December 1 directed the CBI to take over further probe.

In a boost to the Central Bureau of Investigation, N K Amin, an accused police officer in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, on Monday filed an application in a lower court to become an approver. He has also sought pardon in the case. The officer filed the application under Section 306 of the CrPC for being considered as an approver and for grant of pardon in the 2007 case. Amin filed another application seeking transfer from the prison.

The Centre on Wednesday filed a fresh affidavit in the Gujarat High Court in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, saying it had never justified the action of the Gujarat police and had no objection to an independent inquiry in the case. "The central government was not concerned with the merits of the action taken by the Gujarat police and anything stated in the (earlier) affidavit was not intended to support or justify the action of the state police," the affidavit stated.

In a big embarrassment to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked its senior counsel K T S Tulsi to withdraw from the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case as he had earlier appeared for the Gujarat government. "To be very honest with you, I do not think it is proper for you to appear in the case. You are a very senior member of the Bar. The state government might not have objected but it is not proper for you," a SC bench said.
